Silver Cross Heart & Diamond 5K Run
Silver Cross Heart & Diamond 5K Run Set for Aug. 4
Joliet, IL (June 18, 2007)--The second annual Silver Cross Heart & Diamond 5K Run, sponsored by Silver Cross Hospital and the Joliet JackHammers, will be held Saturday, Aug. 4 at Silver Cross Field in Joliet before the Joliet JackHammers game. With heart disease being the number one killer of both men and women, all proceeds from the race will benefit Cardiovascular Services at Silver Cross Hospital.
Beginning outside of Silver Cross Field, the event will start at 5:45 p.m. and take runners through Joliet’s City Center ending at home plate inside the ballpark. Entrance fee is $25 in advance and $30 on race day. Included in the fee is one general admission ticket to the Joliet JackHammers game (immediately following the race), t-shirt, food, prizes in 13 age categories, a gift bag, warm-up exercises and free health screenings. Runners can pre-register online at www.silvercross.org.
“For the past three years, we have partnered with Silver Cross to raise awareness about heart disease in our community through various screenings and activities at the ballpark,” says Kelly Sufka, General Manager of the Joliet Jack Hammers. “It’s not everyday that a professional baseball club is able to help save lives.”
With the growing number of people affected by heart disease and other cardiovascular problems, the LaVerne and Dorothy Brown Cardiovascular Institute, located at Silver Cross Hospital, makes cardiovascular services a top priority providing year round prevention, outpatient testing, treatment, and rehabilitation for cardiovascular problems. Whether an emergency during a heart attack or for follow-up care after, Silver Cross offers a combination of the latest technology teamed with an outstanding staff of physicians with Heartland Cardiovascular Center, nurses, and technologists working together to provide care that is second to none. Recent enhancements to the cardiology program include certification of its Chest Pain Center and the addition of a new Siemens Nuclear Medicine camera to enhance clinical performance and a 64-slice CT scanner for diagnosis.
“Becoming aware of the risks and prevention methods of heart disease is vital for men and women,” states Marybeth Antone, Administrative Director of Cardiology and Diagnostic Services at Silver Cross Hospital. “We hope that this run will encourage residents to become more heart healthy, while at the same time, raise funds for more education, prevention and diagnosis resources in our community.”
With 82% of area women having at least one risk factor for heart disease, Silver Cross has introduced the Women’s HeartAdvantage™ Program, a national initiative encouraging women to take control of their heart health. Through screenings and educational materials, the hospital teaches women in the southwest suburbs about heart disease and ways to prevent it.
